Kataoka Drafted in BJ League, Gets a D-League Look
The first week of the SPL saw another IBL team participate, the Nippon Tornadoes. Although they had a 0-5 record, they felt the exposure, competition and opportunity to participate was outstanding. Masaharu "Masa" Kataoka, who suited up for the Nippon Tornadoes during the 2012 IBL regular season and in the SPL, joined the IBL All-Stars at the SPL in the final week as a part of the BJ League-IBL partnership. Masa, the number one draft pick in the BJ League (non-import) taken by the Kyoto Hannaryz was noticed by the D-League's L.A. D-Fenders and many at the SPL.
“The SPL provided another stage for Japanese players and more good experience for our players, coaches and administration. Los Angeles is home to so many great NBA players and teams, a great place for basketball. The hosts were very good to us, Walt Thompson is great to work with and the IBL has a good partnership with the SPL. The IBL season prepared us to go to the SPL and be ready to show scouts and agents some of the talent we have from Japan, this is a very good next step right after our season. We had the first D-League workout for a professional Japanese player, Masaharu "Masa" Kataoka. Masa had a great workout with the L.A. D-Fenders Coach Lewis. This will help us as we keep working on our ultimate goal to place a Japanese player in NBA,” shared Tatsumi Nishida, IBL Asia.

SPLの最初の1週間では、IBLからもう１チーム参加しているチームがあった。ニッポン・トルネードだ。0勝5敗には終わったが、高いレベルの試合への挑戦や、より多くの関係者への露出の機会には手応えを感じたようだ。2012年のIBLの公式戦にもニッポン・トルネードの一員として参加したマサこと片岡正晴選手は、IBLとbjリーグのパートナーシップの一つの取り組みとして、SPL最終週にはIBLオールスターにも加わった。bjリーグの日本人ドラフトの一位で京都ハンナリーズにドラフトされたマサは、DリーグのLAディフェンダーズや多くのSPL関係者からも注目された。
IBLアジアの西田辰巳氏はこう話している。「SPLは日本の選手達にとって新たなステージを、そして我々自身の組織、我々のコーチや選手達に新たな経験を与えてくれる。ロサンゼルスは多くのNBAのスター選手達やチームのホームでもあり、バスケットをするのに非常によいところだ。受け入れ側は私たちに本当に親切にしてくれた。ウォルト・トンプソンさんと協力できたのは素晴らしいし、IBLもSPLとよいパートナーシップをつくることができている。IBLのシーズンは、日本から来ている能力を持った選手達がSPLへ進みスカウトやエージェント達に実力を見てもらうにあたり、とてもよいステップとなった。IBLのシーズンが終わった後の次の段階として、本当に素晴らしい流れができている。日本人プロ選手である片岡正晴選手にとっての初めてDリーグのワークアウトも行うことができた。 マサはLAディフェンダーズのルイスコーチの元で素晴らしいワークアウトを経験することができた。これは私たちが、私たちの最終目標である日本人選手をNBAに送り出すという目標に向かって進むことをさらに加速させてくれるだろう。」
